A Learning Object has been variously defined as "a resource, usually digital and web-based, that can be used and re-used to support learning" (wikipedia), "a reusable, media-independent collection of information used as a modular building block for e-learning content" (Utah Education Network) or "a logical 'chunk' of learning content" (IRIS Education). For the purposes of this site, you can think of a Learning Object as any web content you wish to re-use within the context of a Drupal4Ed book. Here's how it works:

Locate a web page that contains the content you'd like to reuse. You might want to start your search at a Learning Object Repository, however, there is no need to limit yourself to pages that self-identify as 'learning objects'. If you find something especially good, please don't hesitate to add it to the Drupal4Ed Bookmarks list.
Copy the page url onto your system clipboard.
Add a new page to the D4E book that contains related information.
Locate the 'Learning Object' textfield, located directly below the Body textfield in the Book Page Editor
Paste the url into the Learning Object textfield.
Expand the Panel Extras Panel options to add side-panel content such as a page-specific glossary, notes, self-tests, or audio introduction. This is how you will make the content your own, and better integrate it with the other content in your book.
